Eye SurgeryEye Surgery can be preformed for a number of different reasons and there are different surgery procedures for each different type of problem with the eye. A qualified ophthalmologist may be able to perform most surgeries but when a more complicated procedure is needed a patient should seek a doctor that is trained in that area. The most common form of eye surgery is cataract surgery. Cataracts can be caused by aging, disease of the eye or an injury to the eye and creates a 'clouding' of vision. Cataract eye surgery may be necessary when vision is impaired by light not forming a clear image on the retina resulting in loss of vision. If the loss of vision is significant, surgical removal of the lens may need to be performed and the damaged lens is replaced with a plastic intraocular lens. Another condition that may requite eye surgery is Glaucoma. Glaucoma is caused by a group of various diseases affecting the optic nerve that results in vision loss and is evidenced by raised intraocular pressure. There are several different types of glaucoma surgery that help to reduce intraocular pressure. Also within the eye surgery category are surgeries to correct refractive errors. Refractive errors cause reduction in the accuracy of vision due to the fact that light is not transferred correctly from the cornea onto the lens of the eye. Even though these eye surgeries come in different forms and categories such as PRK (Photorefractive keratectomy), AK, (Astigmatic keratotomy) and RK (Radial keratotomy) the most popular is Lasik (Laser assisted sub-epithelial keratomileusis). The technique of Lasik eye surgery has made much advancement over the years. The custom Lasik technique where data is fed to a computer and refractive errors in the eye are recorded and plotted to assist in the eye surgery is called Wavefront Lasik and is the most accurate of the eye surgery techniques. Also Wavefornt Lasik procedures are used in diagnosis of eye problems. Corneal transplants, vitreo-retinal surgery, eye muscle surgery, oculoplastic surgery, Eyelid surgery, surgery involving the lacrimal apparatus, eye removal and orbital surgery round out the list for eye surgeries. These particular eye surgeries are specific to certain conditions and are not the only eye surgeries that are preformed. Physicians that are trained specifically in eye conditions, opthamologists and eye surgeons, will make the determination which type of procedure is best for a particular patient. Eye surgery entails many different factors so finding a qualified doctor that is versed in diseases and problems of the eye and has special training in eye surgery is the best way to ensure positive results when undergoing such procedures. |
